An unfortunate suicide blast happened this morning (Wednesday) outside the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (Data Darbar) approximately at 8:40 Am.

The authorities said that at least eight people including three police officials were martyred and a number got injured. The martyred police officers were identified as Head Constable Shahid Nazir, Head Constable Muhammad Sohail, and Constable Muhammad Saleem.

The report says that the basic target of the attack was a mobile of the Elite Force of Punjab Police that was parked near Gate-2 which is around 200 to 300 meters away from the actual entrance to the shrine. There were four policemen and a drive in the van but at the time of the blast, the drive was not present there and told the reporters that he had went ATM for withdrawing some money at that time.

The blast didn’t only damage the van but also the nearby cars and vehicles as well.

The Mayo hospital imposed an emergency as most of the blast victims were brought there, of which nine injured were told to be in a critical state.

Taking the situation in considering different Punjab police officials has recorded their remark.

Mr. Arif Nawaz Khan- Inspector-General Punjab Police Captain (IG) has confirmed that this attach was purely aimed to target the police force. The attacker in spite of choosing any other side chose the side of Data Darbar where the police are stationed 24/7 on the duty which clears their aim. He added that the blast killed our three police official and a security guard and civilians.

Further, the DIG Operations Lahore Ashfaq Ahmad Khan told the media that there were at least 25 people injured of which some were in critical condition.

Mr. Nayab Haider- Punjab Police spokesperson also remarked about the incident saying,

“It was a suicide bombing. The target was a vehicle of the Elite force that was stationed outside the gate for checking.”

Lahore Deputy Commissioner Saleha Saeed spoke to the media and highlighted that one of the dead bodies brought in to Mayo Hospital was that of the suspected attacker.

“It was a suicide attack. Ball bearings were also used in the attack,” she further said.

After the attack, the area has been sealed and entry to Data Darbar has been banned to investigate the situation and collect the evidence. The crime scene teams and the Bomb disposal squad has gathered at the shrine and the police are also busy in recording the statements of the eye-witnesses.

Mr. Usman Buzdar– the Chief Minister of Punjab has called an emergency security meeting and has strictly ordered to investigate the situation to its depth on the earliest as possible. He has canceled his trip to Sargodha, Bhakkar, and Sheikhupura and is now on his way back to Lahore.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has also bonded the authorities to look in the matter and submit the report.


Here to remind that this holy shrine (Data Darbar) which dates back to the 11th century had also been targeted earlier in a 2010 suicide bomb blast killing more than 40 people.
