Johnson & Johnson drops skin-whitening creams
The consumer-product company Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) has agreed to quit distributing famous skin-whitening creams in Asia and the Middle East, despite increased societal unrest in recent weeks in the light of a global discussion on racial injustice. Johnson & Johnson will stop selling their Clean & Clear Fairness line of products sold in India.
“Conversations over the last few weeks have revealed that certain drug descriptions or statements on our dark spot reducer items are light or white as greater than your own particular skin color,” said Johnson & Johnson. “It has never been our goal – good skin is beautiful skin.”The healthcare corporation confirmed that it will no longer manufacture or export the items, but that they would still remain on supermarket shelves before supplies ran out.
Creams that aim to lighten or brighten skin are sold mainly to women by the world’s leading personal care firms, including Unilever (ULVR.L), Procter & Gamble (PG.N) and L’Oreal (OREP.PA) under their respective names Fair & Lovely, Olay and Garnier. The corporations did not react instantly to a request for comments.
Approximately 6,277 tons of skin lighteners were distributed worldwide last year, according to Euromonitor International, including items advertised as anti-aging creams for dark spots or freckles.The decision to drop the Effective Fairness Line is the first effort by Johnson & Johnson to respond to the outrage and anti-racism marches that have taken place around the nation following George Floyd’s tragic death.
In this respect, Band-Aid, also operated by Johnson & Johnson, revealed last week that it will start offering bandages tailored to suit various skin tones.”We stand in harmony with our Black friends, allies and the world in the fight against bigotry, abuse and inequality,” Band-Aid said in a statement in Instagram.
The company noted that in 2005 it sold bandages with different skin tones but “due to a lack of demand” discontinued the products.”Since then, we’ve seen an increase in conversation on this subject, and we’ve been planning to bring a new offering to the market for diverse skin tones,” the company said in a statement.
