LAILAT UL QADR- THE NIGHT OF POWER
اَللّٰہُمَّ   اِنَّکَ   عَفُوٌّ  کَرِیمٌ   تُحِبُّ  الْعَفْوَ  فَاعْفُ  عَنِّیْ
Lailat ul Qadr, a night which is considered as the most sacred and the most blessed night of the year.
“We have indeed revealed this (Holy Quran) in the Night of Power. And what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein come down the angels and the spirit by God’s permission, on every errand: Peace! This until the rise of Morn.” (Surah Qadr: 1-5)
LAILAT UL QADR
The word Lailat ul Qadr is an Arabic word which is often translated variously in English such as the Night of Power, the Night of Decree, the Night of destiny, the Night of Glory, the Night of Measures, or the Night of Value. Therefore, it is also believed by the Muslims that Allah Almighty decides the Destiny, Sustenance, Birth, Death, Good, and Evil of the affairs, etc for all of HIS creation in the night of Lailat ul Qadr.
The excellence and the importance of this night can be seen in this single Hadith of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) which is narrated by Sayyiduna Maalik Bin Anas رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه : The ages of all creation were shown to the Beloved Rasool (ﷺ), when He (ﷺ) got the shortest age [of all] for his Ummah, He (ﷺ) became sad, [as] due to short age, his Ummatis [the followers] will not be able to carry out righteous deeds equal to the [Ummatis of] previous Ummah. So, Allahعَزَّوَجَلَّ blessed the Beloved Rasool (ﷺ) with Shab-e-Qadr which is better than a thousand months of other Ummahs. (Tafseer Kabeer, vol. 11, pp. 231, Taht-al-Ayah: 3)
It is the night when the Holy Quran was revealed upon our Beloved Prophet (PBUH). Allah Almighty has mentioned in the Holy Quran that this night is better than a thousand months:
“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months” (Quran, 97:3).
This means any worship that is performed during this single special night brings more rewards than the worship that a person carries out for a period of thousand months that is equivalent to 84-years-basically, a lifetime of worship outside this night.
It has been narrated in a Hadith: “Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and sincerity, shall have all their past sins forgiven.” [Bukhari and Muslim]
When is Lailat ul Qadr?
The actual knowledge about the happening of Lailat ul Qadr has been kept secret due to the divine will of Almighty Allah so that the Muslims to sake for it to gain grand forgiveness and mercy from HIM. Therefore, one can not exactly be sure as to whether which night is Lailat ul Qadr but it has been guided through various Hadiths of The Holy Prophet (PBUH) that the night might fall in the last ten days of the Holy month of Ramadan, especially the odd nights i.e. 21st, 23rd, 25th,27th, & 29th are of more consideration. However, the most emphasize for its happening is on the 27th night.
The Beloved Rasool (ﷺ) has stated, “Search for Shab-e-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of blessed Ramadan’. (Sahih Bukhari, vol. 1, pp. 661, Hadees 2017)
As the happening of Lailatul-Qadr is hidden, some specific signs have been told by which those who have wisdom can find out as when did it fall? These signs are:

  • The sun rises early in the morning without rays.
  • Rain may fall either during the night or during the day of that night.
  • During the night the sky will be lightly foggy.
  • The sky will be slightly lighted without reflections and without rays.
  • The angels and Gabriel all descend down onto earth for many purposes.

The most precise way to gain the benefits and the blessings of this night is to stay awake for the whole night to do the worships or if someone because of any reason cannot spend the whole night in prayer should at least give a specific part to the night to pray for Allah Almighty.
May Allah Almighty give us the strength to collect blessings of Shab-e-Qadr in the Holy month of Ramadan! Ameen
